Anna Thompson is a junior at Homewood Flossmoor High School. She excels in her classes, with a high grade point average, is in many school activities including DECA, National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Varsity Golf, Varsity Soccer, Snowball. Outside of school she is a group leader at her church.
Her application began with the words, My business is a gourmet grilled cheese food truck titled “Say Cheese.” We feature 10 unique types of grilled cheese along with specialty drinks and sides. In 2017 she stumbled upon a vintage food trailer in Southwest Michigan. She always loved to cook and was immediately inspired to craft a business plan for a restaurant of her own. Unable to negotiate a viable lease, her father and Anna constructed a food truck. She began her business on the 4th of July in Sawyer Michigan, ran the business all summer, both cooking and taking orders. Upon her return to Flossmoor, she turned to her friends to help during busy festivals, with Anna doing the cooking and assisting with the overall operation.
She served roughly 40-50 new customers per day over a 4 hour time period, participated in 7 local festival events in the Homewood/Flossmoor area, keeps metrics of her service, markets through Instagram and Twitter, and has been featured on television in Michigan.
Intrigued? So were we. And it doesn’t end here: Anna is planning to transition Say Cheese into a more socially conscious company by pairing with No Kid Hungry. And to expand/modify her menu and more.
