The company was founded in Chicago over 50 years ago. It was chartered in Illinois and over the years expanded to Wisconsin & Florida. It is a family- owned business & the largest privately held bank in Illinois. In the early 90s, there were no banking restrictions. Banks were consolidating the banks they owned. That is how First American Bank eventually got started-from consolidations. It is a full service bank with a lot of international banking in Miami, Florida, an entry to Latin America. They believe they are in some ways a study in contrasts because they are a community bank at heart with international expertise! Thomas E. Wells IV has such a passion for the banking industry at large and specifically for First American Bank! He has been in the banking industry his entire working life. His father had a friend who was buying banks in the 1950s. His father got him a job at one of the banks. He thoroughly enjoyed the work. After college he returned to a banking job. The word he used to describe working in the banking industry is "fun!" Thomas Wells IV has such a passion and love for this industry! As I was listening to him speak, I could feel the love he has for banking. He let me know they are not for everybody. For him, it's all about character! He believes if you serve your clients & shareholders well you will do well as a company. He values his employees highly. He really looks for integrity & character in his employees & feels it's there when you hire the right ones
