The first awardee in the Training Excellence of the Year is a non-for-profit organization that was been around since 1972. Safer Foundation’s mission is to “pave that road with stabilizing support, employment, education, and advocacy that empower justice-involved individuals to achieve their true potential” The organization is focused on supporting the efforts of people with criminal records to become employed, law-abiding members of the community and as a result, reduce recidivism. Safer Foundation in South Holland offers comprehensive reentry assistance, job placement and educational programming for up to sixteen weeks. They establish a way forward for people involved in the justice system with evidence-based assessments, inventory surveys, and career exploration assessments for job placement and entrepreneur training. They are an intermediary between employer and employee. Wrap around services for reentry support include gas cards for employment, obtaining identification or referrals for substance abuse and mental health services. They partner and conduct outreach events with faith-based associations, Prairie State College, South Suburban College, Governors State University and Restorative Ministries. A quote from their website states, “Lean on a support system within the justice-involved community to create a stable road for reentry.”
